The Federal Government is set to provide a monthly palliative of N25,000 to about 230,411 households in Kogi State as part of its “Renewed Hope Initiative Intervention” aimed at cushioning the impact of fuel subsidy removal. Sadiya Abdullahi, the National Enrolment Manager of the National Cash Transfer Office (NCTO), revealed this during the enrolment process for targeted beneficiaries in Lokoja.

Abdullahi explained that the programme would leverage the structure of the National Social Safety Net project to support households affected by the fuel subsidy removal. She stated that over 15 million households across Nigeria would benefit from the N25,000 monthly disbursement for three months in the initial phase of the intervention.

The beneficiaries were selected from the verified National Social Safety Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) list, ensuring transparency and accountability in the process. The initiative aims to digitally enrol both banked and unbanked beneficiaries, promoting financial inclusion by supporting unbanked beneficiaries in opening bank accounts.

Bridget James, the Head of Operation at the Kogi Cash Transfer Unit, emphasized that the exercise would capture over 171,000 new beneficiaries in addition to the 74,000 existing households already benefiting from the monthly N5,000 Cash Transfer since 2016. She assured beneficiaries that the enrolment process would be carried out efficiently across all 21 local government areas of the state.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), some beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the government for the support. Hawal Bala, a 75-year-old woman, thanked the government and President Tinubu, while James Friday from Maigari Palace, Lokoja, acknowledged the relief the intervention would bring to him and others affected by the subsidy removal.
