Rivers Assembly Reverses Impeachment Move Against Governor Fubara After Peace Deal

The Rivers State House of Assembly has retracted the impeachment notice against Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This decision, announced during a session at the House, was attributed to a gesture of respect for the President.

The withdrawal of the impeachment notice comes after a meeting held by about twenty-six lawmakers aligned with former Governor Nyesom Wike at the House of Assembly Complex on Wednesday morning.

The recent developments follow a peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu on Monday between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. The political tension in the state has reportedly arisen from a power struggle between Governor Fubara and Wike, who currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The rift resulted in a division within the House of Assembly, with 27 lawmakers crossing party lines to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), leading to parallel sittings and an attempted impeachment of the governor. The situation even escalated to the point of the Assembly complex being demolished.

During the meeting at the Aso Villa on Monday, attended by both Wike and Fubara, President Tinubu and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu presided over the negotiations, which resulted in commitments from both sides to withdraw all court cases, among other concessions.

The lawmakers had initiated impeachment proceedings against the governor on the 30th of October 2023, less than 24 hours after the Assembly complex was attacked.
