President Bola Tinubu has forwarded a request to the Senate seeking confirmation for the appointment of 11 justices to the Supreme Court. This request was communicated in a letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and was read during the Senate’s plenary session on Wednesday.

According to the letter, President Tinubu’s request is in line with section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which empowers the President to nominate justices for the Supreme Court subject to the Senate’s confirmation.

The nominated justices, whose confirmation and subsequent appointment are being sought, include Justices Jummai Sankey, Stephen Adah, Mohammed Idris, and Haruna Tsammani. Additionally, the list comprises Jamilu Tukur, Abubakar Umar, Chidiebere Uwa, Chioma Nwosu-Iheme, Obande Ogbuinya, Moore Adumein, and Habeeb Abiru.

The nomination of these justices to the nation’s apex court is a significant development in Nigeria’s judiciary. If confirmed, they will play crucial roles in upholding the principles of justice and fairness in the country’s legal system.

The Senate is expected to deliberate on President Tinubu’s request and conduct the necessary confirmation proceedings to ascertain the suitability of the nominated justices for appointment to the Supreme Court.
