Chevron Nigeria Ltd. Partners with NUJ for Journalists’ Capacity Building

Chevron Nigeria Ltd., in collaboration with the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos State Council, recently organized a one-day capacity building event for journalists in Lagos State. The theme of the event was “Enhancing Business and Economy: The Role of the Media.”

Mr. Adeleye Ajayi, the Chairman of the Lagos State Council of NUJ, expressed gratitude to Chevron Nigeria for their partnership and emphasized the council’s commitment to the development of journalism in Lagos State. He urged the participating journalists to make the most of the training to enhance their skills in business reporting and agenda setting.

During the event, Mrs. Chinyere Joel-Nwokeoma, a Senior Editor at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and Chairman of the Capital Market Correspondents Association of Nigeria, highlighted the importance of regular training and re-training for journalists to improve their effectiveness. She emphasized the need for journalists to have a deep understanding of their beats, especially when covering capital and money markets.

Mrs. Joel-Nwokeoma delivered a paper titled “Money and Capital Markets in Transforming the Economy (Media Perspective),” where she underscored the crucial roles of money and capital markets in economic growth. She emphasized that the media plays a vital role in informing and educating the public about these markets, as well as advocating for their development.

Another resource person, Mr. Tajudeen Atitebi, urged journalists to analyze sectoral allocations in national and state annual budgets. He emphasized the importance of scrutinizing budget estimates to ensure transparency and realistic assumptions, highlighting that journalists should be able to communicate budget details effectively without overwhelming their audience with statistics.

Dr. Ovie Edomi, a veteran journalist, discussed the potential of Nigeria’s maritime economy, highlighting the opportunities for export and foreign exchange earnings. He emphasized the need to harness Nigeria’s maritime resources for national growth and development, calling for increased training in seafaring jobs and effective utilization of lakes and islands for economic purposes.
