President Bola Tinubu, in a significant revelation during the 47th convocation ceremony at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, highlighted his administration’s commitment to leveraging innovation as a solution to Nigeria’s pressing socioeconomic challenges.

Represented by the Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Sununu, President Tinubu expressed the government’s determination to make bold decisions aimed at revitalizing the nation’s education sector.

Acknowledging the multifaceted challenges Nigeria faces, including poverty, inflation, insecurity, political instability, and infrastructure deficits, President Tinubu emphasized the inherent opportunities for innovation and growth within these challenges.

He asserted that graduates and the education system possess the potential to significantly contribute to addressing these issues and shaping a more prosperous future.

“As a government, we cannot ignore the challenges; instead, we must view them as opportunities for innovation and growth,” said President Tinubu.

He pledged increased government investment in education and research, aiming to empower graduates to actively participate in addressing the nation’s complex problems.

The President assured a holistic approach to strengthen the education system at all levels, with a focus on making Nigerian universities globally competitive.

Furthermore, he pledged to tackle the root causes of trade union strikes in educational institutions, minimizing disruptions to students’ academic pursuits.

Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, the Etsu Nupe and Chancellor of the University, underscored the critical role of human resources in shaping a nation’s future.

He commended the graduating class, noting that their education at Obafemi Awolowo University had equipped them with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in an ever-changing world.

Professor Simeon Bamire, the Vice-Chancellor, appealed to the federal government to intervene in the University’s power project, ensuring its completion and preventing it from becoming an abandoned initiative.

In a ceremony that celebrated academic excellence, Professor Toyin Falola received an honorary Doctor of Letters, while Dr Anastasios Leventis was honored with a Doctor of Science in Environment Sciences for their remarkable contributions to human development.
