Poor Telecom Networks in Nigeria Blamed on Vandalism, Minister Calls for Critical Infrastructure Status

The Minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has attributed drop calls and subpar telecommunication networks in Nigeria to acts of vandalism.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, Tijani revealed plans to declare telecoms infrastructure as critical national assets in a bid to curb vandalism.

He emphasized the need for about $2 billion investment to lay fibre optics cables across Nigeria for optimal network performance.

Tijani highlighted that instances of poor connectivity often stem from the destruction of infrastructure, leading to disruptions in service quality.

He expressed concern over the vandalization of base stations, where thieves not only steal valuable components but also disrupt the overall functionality of the equipment.

By declaring telecommunication infrastructure as critical national assets, the minister aims to afford them a higher level of protection to prevent unauthorized interference.

The minister disclosed ongoing efforts to address the issue, stating, “There are times people dig the ground and they end up breaking fibre optics cables – those fibre optics cables also contribute to the quality of services that you and I get.”

The declaration of critical infrastructure status is expected to deter acts of vandalism and ensure the seamless operation of telecom networks across the country.

Tijani underscored the importance of investing in laying fibre optics cables, estimating the need for approximately $2 billion for comprehensive coverage.

This investment, he believes, will significantly enhance the performance of telecom networks and address the challenges associated with drop calls and connectivity issues.
