The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), has demolished a critically distressed three-storey building at 16, Oloto Street in the Ebute-Metta area of the state.

Commissioner Dr. Oluyinka Olumide emphasized the government’s responsibility to protect lives and properties, stating that the demolition was necessary to avert a potential collapse.

Before the demolition, the building owner had received notice to evacuate following a non-destructive test (NDT) that revealed its structural instability.

Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager of LASBCA, explained that most distressed buildings marked by the agency failed NDT, indicating their unsuitability for habitation or heavy goods storage.

The ongoing demolition exercise aims to ensure the safety of lives and properties, with 42 other distressed buildings in Oloto and adjoining streets marked for possible demolition.

Owners failing to comply may face sanctions, including the forfeiture of the land to the state government.
