First Lady Pushes for More Women Inclusion and Participation in the Armed Forces

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady, has called on the leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to actively encourage women to join the military.

She emphasised the importance of eliminating gender-based discrimination against women in the military, especially concerning marriage and childbirth.

The first lady’s charge was delivered by the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, during the Defence Headquarters’ one-day Gender Mainstreaming Conference.

The event focused on “Building Capacity Through Gender Mainstreaming to Meet Security Challenges.”

Senator Tinubu stressed that women should not face discrimination based on marital or family status while serving in the military.

She also highlighted the need for increased cooperation to address and eliminate gender-based violence within security forces.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Baduru, acknowledged and supported the recommendations made by the First Lady.
