President Bola Tinubu has officially launched the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System (e-CRVS) in Nigeria, alongside the National Geospatial Data Repository and the National Coordination Committee on CRVS.

The CRVS is designed to continuously record vital and civil status events related to citizens and residents in a permanent, compulsory, and universal manner to gather accurate data on the population.

During the launch ceremony at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Tinubu praised the National Population Commission (NPC) and expressed his hope that the e-CRVS system will help Nigeria achieve its 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) target of real-time identity management and population data.

The e-CRVS system will provide valuable information to citizens and serve as a useful tool for public service delivery across various government agencies, particularly in the security sector.

The President also commended private solution providers, Barnksforte Technologies Limited, for their contribution to this significant project, emphasising the government’s commitment to partnering with private investors.

President Tinubu pledged his administration’s support for the upcoming national housing and population census.

He highlighted the importance of the new population data system, which will enhance service delivery, care, and knowledge for Nigerians and provide valuable identity data for federal agencies like NIMC, NIS, Road Safety, INEC, Police, EFCC, and other security organisations.

The e-CRVS system will also improve the ability of these agencies to generate vital statistics related to population events and migration, enabling the government to design more effective and efficient policies that meet the needs of the Nigerian people.

The President expressed his hope that the new system would contribute to the achievement of the 2030 SDG target for real-time identity management and population data.

UNICEF’s Country Representative, Cristian Munduate, commended Nigeria’s launch of the system and the inauguration of the National CRVS Coordination.

Munduate noted that this effort is a beacon of hope for Nigeria’s sustainable development and rights-based future, affirming the dignity and rights of every citizen.

The e-CRVS system is a significant step towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 16.9.2, providing legal identity for all, including birth registration.

The Chairman of the National Population Commission, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, emphasised the government’s commitment to strengthening civil registration data and achieving SDG 16.9.2—a legal identity for all, including birth registration.

This initiative aims to accelerate the development of the civil registration and vital statistics systems in Nigeria over the next seven years, significantly impacting the country’s development and population data management.

The e-CRVS system is expected to play a crucial role in tracking maternal mortality rates, child mortality rates, and the overall well-being of children in Nigeria, providing valuable statistics for planning and programme interventions.

It will also help address issues related to maternal mortality and improve maternal health in the country.

This launch represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to enhance its civil registration and vital statistics system, contributing to better governance, effective policy planning, and the protection of citizens’ rights and identities.
