The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released 59 students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, who were arrested during a raid conducted in a private estate where the students live.

The university’s management announced their release, which was secured following the institution’s intervention.

The Vice-Chancellor of OAU commended the EFCC for the rapid profiling and release of the students and called for collaborative efforts to raise awareness among students about the perils of financial crimes and cybercriminal activities.

A total of 69 students were arrested for their alleged involvement in internet fraud during a midnight operation by EFCC operatives.

The EFCC emphasised its commitment to conducting a thorough investigation, and those found guilty would face legal charges.

The university stressed its stance against shielding anyone engaged in criminal activities while ensuring the protection of the rights of innocent students.

The arrest of the students led to the creation of the hashtag #FreeOAUStudents, which gained traction on social media.
