A leader of a Nigerian police team has been arrested for allegedly brutalizing and extorting N3 million from a Ghana returnee in Bayelsa State. The Nigerian Police Force confirmed the arrest and recovery of the extorted money.The arrest followed a complaint by Liberty Isaac Kelechi, who claimed that on August 26, 2024, he was traveling to Imo State when five policemen at a checkpoint stopped his vehicle. Kelechi reported that the officers seized their phones and coerced him into transferring N3 million to two different accounts, threatening violence if he refused.SP Gunn Ewhoborwo Emonena, the spokesperson for Police Zone 16 in Yenagoa, stated that the implicated team leader has been sent to Abuja for trial, dismissal, and further legal action. He emphasized that the police are committed to disciplining their members, asserting that the team leader has been in Abuja since Wednesday.The incident has highlighted ongoing concerns about police misconduct and corruption, with the Nigerian Police Force taking steps to address the issue and recover the stolen funds.
