Nigerian Scheme, NYSC Blames Late Arrival Of Prospective Corps Members To Camp For Non-Registration
Thousands of prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members were stranded at orientation camps across Nigeria due to being turned away for late arrival. The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) attributed the issue to delays by the prospective corps members (PCMs) in reaching their designated camps.Reports from SaharaReporters indicated that many PCMs who had been mobilized for the 2024 Batch “B” Stream 2 were unable to register because they arrived after the deadline. Specifically, some affected individuals reached the Lagos camp only to be sent back home after incurring significant transportation costs.According to a statement from Caroline Embu, the NYSC Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, the registration period was clearly outlined in the call-up letters. Registration was scheduled to end by midnight on August 29, 2024, with the swearing-in ceremony set for August 30, 2024. Despite the NYSC extending the registration deadline to midnight on August 30, some PCMs still arrived too late and were not registered. The NYSC management responded by visiting the camps and addressing the situation. The Director-General of NYSC expressed sympathy for the affected PCMs but emphasized the importance of adhering to the registration deadlines as per the NYSC regulations. However, he instructed that the affected PCMs be provided with accommodation and meals while awaiting a resolution. The NYSC also assured that those who made an effort but could not register in time would be considered for the 2024 Batch “C” mobilization. The NYSC reiterated that the operations of the scheme are governed by its enabling Act and Bye-laws, and compliance with these rules is crucial.
