NAHCON Raises 2024 Hajj Fees Amid Exchange Rate Surge

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has announced a further increase in the rates for the 2024 Hajj pilgrimage, attributing the adjustment to fluctuations in the foreign exchange rate. Intending pilgrims who had previously paid N4.9 million each are now required to pay an additional N1.9 million each by 28th March. The new registration fee has been set at N8.5 million.

The commission’s spokesperson, Fatima Sanda-Usara, explained that the decision to raise the rates was necessary due to the current exchange rate of N1,474.00 to a dollar. This adjustment affects approximately 49,000 pilgrims who had paid the old fees when the exchange rate was lower.

Despite efforts to maintain the previous fare, NAHCON stated that it was no longer feasible, leading to the announcement of the new rates. Intending pilgrims are advised to pay the balance of N1,918,032.91 by the specified deadline, as the commission will not accept further payments after 29th March.

For new registrations, pilgrims from northern states are required to pay N8.2 million, while those from the south are to pay N8.4 million. This marks the third increment in Hajj fares by NAHCON in recent months, initially starting at N4.5 million and gradually increasing to the current rates.

The rate adjustments have stirred controversy among prospective pilgrims, with many expressing concerns over the affordability of the pilgrimage. The commission has defended its decision, citing the need to ensure equitable distribution of the Federal Government’s intervention among all registered pilgrims.
