Former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, has stirred controversy by suggesting that many Nigerians have become lethargic and are unwilling to work, preferring to seek easy money. He lamented that the country is now plagued by a ‘get-rich-quick syndrome,’ which has led to widespread hunger.

Speaking at the 10th Ramadan Lecture of Anwar-ul Islam College, Agege Old Students’ Association (ACAOSA) in Lagos, Obanikoro recounted his own experiences, highlighting that he had engaged in manual labor, newspaper vending, and hawking while growing up. He expressed concern that the desire for instant wealth is undermining the nation’s work ethic and contributing to its economic challenges.

Commenting on the recent killing of soldiers in Delta State, Obanikoro described the incident as tragic and called for swift justice against the perpetrators. He emphasized the need to deter future attacks on security personnel, stressing the importance of respecting law enforcement officers.

Addressing Nigeria’s economic woes, the former Ambassador to Ghana emphasized the collective responsibility of all citizens in overcoming challenges. He praised efforts by the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to tackle the nation’s difficulties but stressed that individuals at all levels must play their part.

Obanikoro cautioned against relying solely on the president for national transformation, urging teachers, students, police, civil servants, politicians, and other stakeholders to contribute positively to the country’s progress. He emphasized that everyone has a role to play in building a prosperous and secure Nigeria.

The former minister’s remarks have sparked debate, with some agreeing that a shift in attitude is needed, while others criticize his characterization of Nigerians as lazy. Nevertheless, his call for a collective effort towards national development resonates with the ongoing discourse on Nigeria’s future.
