Meta Platforms and Nigeria Forge Ahead with Tech Partnerships for Economic Growth
President Bola Tinubu has revealed his administration’s commitment to investing in digital technology to bolster small businesses, create opportunities across various sectors, and position Nigeria as a leader in information and communications technology (ICT) in Africa.
During a meeting with a delegation from Meta Platforms Incorporated, led by Sir Nick Clegg, Tinubu highlighted the importance of technological advancements and the need for Nigeria to remain competitive in the digital age. He emphasized the significance of preparing Nigerian youths for the future by providing them with essential digital skills through the 3MTT programme.
Tinubu expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Meta Platforms and other stakeholders to advance technological developments in Nigeria, stating, “Nigeria is open for business. We want to lead the African continent in digital technology. Data is valuable to our development. We are ready to cooperate on technological advancements.”
The President also underscored the role of technology in driving small businesses, stating his commitment to leveraging technology to enhance the business environment and promote mutual interests.
In response, Clegg praised Tinubu for his executive order that facilitated the landing of Meta’s deep-sea cable in Nigeria. The cable, expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2025, is poised to significantly increase economic activity across Africa.
Clegg also announced Meta’s plans to introduce a feature on its Instagram app in June, allowing Nigerian creators to monetize their content. He expressed Meta’s readiness to deepen partnerships in Nigeria and highlighted the importance of collaboration in promoting development in the digital economy sector.
Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr ‘Bosun Tijani, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the critical role of Meta platforms in Nigeria and the need for continued engagement to create opportunities and contribute to global prosperity through digital technology.
