Nnamdi Kanu Vows to Restore Peace in South-East in Minutes if Released

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has pledged to bring peace to Nigeria’s troubled South-East region. His promise comes after the Federal High Court in Abuja rejected his latest bail application in the treasonable felony case brought against him by the Federal Government.

Kanu, who was first arrested in 2015 and has been in detention since June 2021, had previously been granted bail on health grounds in 2017. However, he escaped from the country during his trial and was later re-arrested in Kenya and returned to Nigeria.

Despite the Court of Appeal ordering his release and quashing the charges against him, the Supreme Court overturned this decision, allowing the FG to proceed with the trial. Kanu expressed frustration with the legal proceedings, suggesting government complicity in prolonging his detention for financial gain.

He stated, “They know me very well. I suspect that people in government are complicit. They are making money with insecurity. If they know Nnamdi Kanu is outside in two minutes, this nonsense will stop.”

The South-East has experienced increased insecurity, including kidnappings, armed robberies, and killings, since Kanu’s detention. Notable incidents include the murder of Dr. Chike Akunyili, husband of late Dora Akunyili, and an attack on Senator Ifeanyi Uba’s convoy resulting in several deaths.

The region’s residents have endured these challenges amidst Kanu’s absence, highlighting the need for a resolution to the ongoing legal battles. Kanu’s pledge to restore peace in the South-East, if given the opportunity, reflects the desire for stability in the region.
