“Nigerians Cannot Survive on Less than N100,000 Monthly Wage,” Lawmaker Warns as House of Representatives Initiates Ad Hoc Committee for Living Wage Implementation

The House of Representatives has taken a significant step towards ensuring a living wage for all workers in Nigeria by establishing an ad hoc committee. This decision, made during a plenary session in Abuja, follows a motion presented by 35 members highlighting the challenges faced by Nigerians due to the country’s high inflation rate.

Rep. Aliyu Madaki, sponsor of the motion, emphasized the dire situation faced by many Nigerians who struggle to afford basic necessities like food, housing, education, and healthcare. He cited Nigeria’s commitment to the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that every worker has the right to just and favourable remuneration.

Madaki also noted the importance of a living wage in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, as eight of the 17 goals require adequate remuneration for workers. He referenced a World Bank report that highlighted the impact of low purchasing power and high inflation on poverty levels in Nigeria.

Despite recent wage awards by the president, Madaki highlighted that the cost of living in Nigeria continues to rise, surpassing the pre-subsidy removal living wage estimates. He warned that without immediate action, more Nigerians would fall into poverty, leading to desperation and loss of faith in the government.

Deputy Speaker Rep. Benjamin Kalu announced that the committee’s recommendations would be sent to the Senate for concurrence. This move signifies the government’s recognition of the urgent need to address the economic challenges faced by Nigerian workers and the wider population.
