Amid the current security challenges facing Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga, has called on the media to exhibit caution in their reporting. Onanuga emphasized the media’s role in promoting constructive government actions and offering positive criticism in the national interest.

Expressing concern over sensationalized headlines portraying a grim security situation, Onanuga cautioned that such reports could deter both local and foreign investments, potentially harming the country’s economic prospects.

Acknowledging Nigeria’s security challenges, Onanuga highlighted that the country’s situation is not the worst globally. Citing statistics, he noted that Nigeria ranks lower than several other countries in terms of kidnapping incidents per 100,000 people. He emphasized that while challenges exist, Nigeria’s security agencies have been working diligently since 2009 to address them.

Onanuga urged the media to support the efforts of security agencies and avoid exaggerated reports that may paint an overly negative picture of the country’s security landscape. He also commended President Tinubu’s initiatives, including financial support to security agencies and the allocation of special funds for addressing security challenges in specific regions.

In conclusion, Onanuga called for a collaborative approach involving all stakeholders to complement the government’s efforts in enhancing national security. He emphasized the need for balanced and responsible reporting that takes into account the broader national interest.
