Lagos State Government Announces 98-Day Closure of Marine Bridge for Maintenance

The Lagos State Government has revealed plans to close the Ijora 7-up end of the Marine Bridge for a period of 98 days to facilitate comprehensive maintenance works.

According to the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the closure will take effect from 2nd February to 10th May 2024. Osiyemi emphasized that the closure is necessary to carry out extensive repairs aimed at ensuring the bridge’s safety and longevity.

To mitigate the impact of the closure on motorists, alternative routes have been identified to provide convenient access during the maintenance period. Motorists traveling towards Apapa from the Bridge are advised to utilize the Malu road via Mobil road U-turn, leading to the Marine Bridge Access Ramp (Inbound Apapa). From there, they can proceed to Point Road U-turn, which leads back to the Marine Bridge (Ijora bound), following the diversion at the closed section.

Additionally, motorists have the option to use the Marine Bridge road towards Malu road, accessing the Mobil road u-turn and then proceeding to Area B/NAGAFF to access Point road u-turn into Marine Bridge (Ijora bound).

To ensure smooth traffic flow and minimize inconvenience to commuters, the Commissioner assured that Traffic Management Personnel would be deployed to the affected routes.

The closure of the Marine Bridge for maintenance underscores the state government’s commitment to infrastructure development and safety. However, the announcement has sparked concerns among residents and businesses that rely on the bridge for transportation, raising questions about the potential impact on daily activities and commercial operations in the area.

While the maintenance work is essential for the bridge’s structural integrity, some residents have expressed frustration over the inconvenience it may cause, especially considering the already congested nature of Lagos roads. Critics have called for proactive measures to alleviate traffic congestion and ensure that alternative routes are adequately prepared to handle increased traffic flow during the closure period.
