President Bola Tinubu has called on the Senate to promptly confirm the dismissal of Babatunde Irukera, the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). This request comes three weeks after President Tinubu relieved Irukera and Alexander Okoh of their positions as CEO and Director-General/CEO of the FCCPC and Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE) respectively.

The President’s request was conveyed in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during the Senate’s plenary session on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, marking the lawmakers’ return from the Christmas and New Year recess.

President Tinubu has also nominated Mr. Oluwole Adama for the position of Executive Director of the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund in the Petroleum Regulatory Authority (MDGIF). The President’s letter, titled “Request for confirmation of appointment of executive director for the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA),” was read out during the plenary session.

The letter stated, “In accordance with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021… I’m pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Oluwole Adama as the Executive Director, Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund in the Petroleum Regulatory Authority. While I hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominee in an expeditious manner, please accept distinguished Senate President and distinguished senators, the assurances of my highest regards.”

Following the reading of the letter, Akpabio referred it to the Senate Committees on Gas and Petroleum Downstream for consideration, with a report expected within one week.

In a related development, President Tinubu had earlier removed Babatunde Irukera and Alexander Okoh from their positions as CEO of FCCPC and Director-General/CEO of BPE, respectively, effective immediately. The President’s spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, stated that the dismissal was part of the administration’s efforts to restructure and reposition key federal agencies to protect consumer rights and contribute to the nation’s economy.
