Pope Francis has expressed optimism regarding the gradual acceptance of his decision to allow blessings for same-sex couples, except in Africa where opposition remains strong among bishops and many others.

In an interview published on Monday, the Pope acknowledged that while critics of the blessings, apart from in Africa, may eventually come around to his position, the situation in Africa is perceived as a “special case.” This acknowledgment comes after the Pope’s decision last month to permit such blessings in a document titled Fiducia Supplicans (Supplicating Trust), which has sparked a debate within the Catholic Church.

Addressing the opposition, Pope Francis noted, “Those who protest vehemently belong to small ideological groups.” He further highlighted the African perspective, stating, “A special case are Africans: for them, homosexuality is something ‘bad’ from a cultural point of view, they don’t tolerate it.”

Despite these challenges, the Pope expressed his trust in the gradual reassurance of everyone by the spirit of the ‘Fiducia Supplicans’ declaration by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. He emphasized that the declaration aims to include rather than divide.

The Pope’s comments have stirred debate within the Catholic Church, with various reactions emerging. Some have supported his inclusive stance, while others have raised concerns about the implications of such a shift in doctrine.
