In a remarkable display of generosity and community support, the Kebbi State Government recently sponsored a mass wedding for no fewer than 300 couples, including divorcees, widows, and indigents. The historic event, organized by the state government under the auspices of Hajia Nafisa Nasir Idris’s Nafisa Nasir Development Foundation, took place at the Abdullahi Fodio palace in Gwandu Emirate, Birnin Kebbi, on Sunday.

Governor Nasir Idris, represented by the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Muhammad Usman-Ankwe, presided over the wedding. The governor commended the initiative, announcing that such mass weddings would be held periodically to assist less privileged men and women in the state.

The state government provided a dowry of N21 million for the 300 brides, with each bride receiving N70,000. Additionally, the administration furnished the couples’ homes and provided them with foodstuffs to support their new lives together.

Governor Idris emphasized that the mass wedding was conducted in accordance with Islamic principles, following consultations with Islamic scholars. He urged the couples to respect the institution of marriage, with the grooms protecting the rights of their wives and the brides remaining loyal and supportive.

Hajia Nafisa Nasir Idris, founder of the NANAS Foundation, expressed gratitude to her husband for his support in making the mass wedding possible. She advised the couples to respect each other and pledged to provide them with skill acquisition training to promote self-reliance.

The event was graced by Islamic scholars who enlightened the couples on the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) regarding marital relationships. They praised the governor and his wife for their initiative, highlighting its positive impact on society.

The Emir of Gwandu, Muhammad Iliyasu Bashar, acted as the guardian for all 300 brides, offering prayers for their prosperous married lives. The mass wedding is seen as a significant step towards promoting family stability and social cohesion in Kebbi State.
