The Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 38 protesters in Lafia for alleged public disturbance following the recent Supreme Court judgment. The court upheld the election of Governor Abdullahi Sule, dismissing the appeal filed by the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), David Umbugadu.

The supporters of Mr. Umbugadu expressed their disappointment with the judgment by barricading the Lafia-Jos road and burning vehicle tyres. The police swiftly moved in and made the arrests.

DSP Ramhan Nansel, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, confirmed the arrest and subsequent prosecution by the command. The suspects were promptly charged before the Chief Magistrates’ Court 3 in Lafia for the offence and remanded at the Lafia Custodial Centre.

During the court proceedings, the prosecuting counsel, Danjuma Allu, mentioned the case for hearing, and the Chief Magistrate, Mohammed Abdullahi Lanze, deferred ruling on their bail application to Monday.

Illiya Ashokpa, the Defence Counsel, had applied for bail on behalf of the protesters, but the request was denied. The protesters, consisting of five males and 33 females, were charged with the offence of public disturbance.

The arrest and prosecution of the protesters highlight the tension and dissatisfaction following the Supreme Court’s decision. The legal proceedings are ongoing, with the court expected to rule on the bail application in the coming days.
