Federal Government and EU Erasmus+ Programme Join Forces to Develop Globally Competitive Graduates
The Federal Government, in collaboration with the European Union Erasmus+ programme, is committed to developing graduates equipped with the necessary skills to drive Nigeria’s sustainable development, according to Dr. Yusuf Sununu, the Minister of State for Education.
Dr. Sununu made this announcement during the inaugural Erasmus+ National Information Day in Abuja, where he highlighted the programme’s goal of producing globally competitive graduates with the skills and competencies needed for sustainable development.
Erasmus+ is an EU programme designed to support education, training, youth, and sports, as well as to fund various programmes, projects, and scholarships. Spanning from 2021 to 2027, the programme aims to raise awareness among Nigerian tertiary institutions and the public about the significance of Erasmus+ programmes for African countries.
The Minister emphasized that Erasmus+ is a multinational exchange programme aimed at fostering international collaboration, leveraging international talent, and facilitating mobility for the exchange of knowledge and research.
Dr. Sununu also underscored the importance of Nigeria’s education system preparing citizens to contribute effectively to national development and compete in the 21st-century knowledge-driven economy. He mentioned the government’s commitment to implementing the Renewed Hope Agenda to achieve these goals.
Highlighting the need for collaboration with international partners and stakeholders, the Minister noted the recent launch of an education Roadmap for the Nigerian education sector.
Moreover, Dr. Sununu emphasized the significance of the Erasmus+ scholarships in providing access to courses not available locally and fostering the development of indigenous faculties.
Zissimos Vergos, the Deputy Head of Delegation for Erasmus+, expressed the EU’s interest in Nigeria’s academic excellence, emphasizing the importance of education in making a meaningful impact and providing life-changing experiences.
