Renowned Political Economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, has clarified that his proposed merger of opposition parties to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027 aims for genuine service to the people rather than “machine politics.” Utomi, who is the Convener of the National Consultative Front (NCFront) and the BIG TENT, emphasized that the merger was not a hastily arranged union of interests but a strategic move towards meaningful change.

His comments came in response to statements made by the Deputy National Organising Secretary of the APC, Nze Chidi Duru, regarding his merger plans. Utomi had earlier announced that Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) had agreed to form a formidable party to challenge the APC in 2027.

Utomi, a prominent figure in the Labour Party, stated that after discussions with the three political heavyweights, he had agreed to spearhead the formation of a mega party that would provide effective leadership for the country. He stressed the need for leaders who are willing to make sacrifices for the nation’s development.

In response to criticism from Duru and the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Felix Morka, who described him as a promoter of mega parties that never materialize, Utomi expressed confidence in the merger initiative, believing that it would lead to positive change for Nigeria.

He clarified that the merger was not about creating a platform for machine politics but aimed to establish a genuine political party, which has been elusive in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. Utomi emphasized the importance of developing a coherent ideology and shared values for the party, focusing on community-based solutions and policies that prioritize the people’s needs.

Utomi highlighted the importance of a national strategy that moves away from elite rent-seeking and corruption towards a productive economy based on regional comparative advantages. He also suggested that past political leaders could have a role in the new party if they acknowledged their mistakes and prioritized the nation’s interests over personal ambitions.

Drawing parallels with Malaysia’s political history, Utomi mentioned the reconciliation between Dr. Mahathir Mohammed and Anwar Ibrahim, which led to their successful partnership in winning elections against a corrupt government. He expressed confidence that Nigeria could experience a similar positive transformation through the merger initiative.
