The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, has issued a directive to security agencies to crack down on criminals involved in the vandalism of street lights in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria. Dr. Peter Olumuji, the Secretary of the Command and Control Centre in the FCTA Department of Security, revealed this during an interview in Abuja on Monday.

Upon assuming office as FCT Minister, Wike prioritized the restoration of street lights as part of his agenda to enhance the city’s illumination and transform Abuja into a more fitting capital. Despite ongoing efforts to restore and maintain functional street lights across the city, vandals have targeted the solar-powered lights in various areas, causing disruptions.

While acknowledging the significant improvement in street lighting in line with the Minister’s directive, Olumuji highlighted the persistent sabotage by unidentified criminals. Reports received by the FCTA Department of Security Service indicate that the vandals primarily strike during the night, targeting solar-powered street lights, their batteries, panels, lighting mechanisms, and poles.

Expressing concern over the misuse of taxpayer-funded infrastructure, Olumuji emphasized the need to address this issue promptly. He disclosed that the FCT Minister had instructed the Police Commissioner of the FCT Command to take decisive action against the vandals, with collaboration from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps.

According to Olumuji, the Minister’s directive aims to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the vandalism, emphasizing that the street lights are installed for the benefit of all residents and to enhance security. He urged residents to report any suspicious activities to the authorities and highlighted the role of well-lit streets in deterring criminal activities.

Plans are underway to replace the vandalized street lights, but Olumuji stressed the importance of community involvement in safeguarding public facilities. He emphasized that proper illumination contributes to improved security by discouraging criminal activities that thrive in darkness.
