Jubilation in Kano as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Returns After Supreme Court Victory

The ancient commercial city of Kano is bustling with excitement as thousands of residents flood the streets in anticipation of the return of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and his entourage. This follows the recent Supreme Court verdict that upheld his victory in the March 18 governorship election in the state.

Previously, the Kano governorship election petition tribunal and the Appeal Court had nullified Governor Yusuf’s election, declaring Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as the winner. However, the Supreme Court in Abuja last Friday dismissed these judgments and affirmed Governor Yusuf’s victory.

Contrary to expectations of potential unrest after the Supreme Court ruling, Governor Yusuf’s supporters and members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) engaged in peaceful celebrations, earning commendations from the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Usaini Gumel, and other security chiefs who had prepared for any eventuality. Similarly, members of the opposition refrained from engaging in any violent actions following the verdict.

Governor Yusuf, his Deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, members of the state Executive Council, and NNPP leaders, who had traveled to Abuja for the Supreme Court ruling, are currently en route to Kano by road. Hundreds of thousands of supporters and NNPP members have gathered at Chiromawa village along Zaria Road, the route from Abuja, while many others have lined the streets leading to Filin Mahaha, the venue of the grand victory rally, where Governor Yusuf is expected to address a large crowd.

Despite the celebratory atmosphere, Kano remains peaceful, with most residents dressed in red clothes and caps to mark the occasion.

As of the latest update, Governor Yusuf, popularly known as Abba Gida Gida, has arrived at Chiromawa amidst a huge crowd welcoming his entourage back to Kano.
