Nneka Dim, a psychologist working at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) in Enugu, has advised Nigerian youths to steer clear of drug abuse in order to lead responsible lives.

Speaking in an interview in Enugu, Ms. Dim emphasized the seriousness of drug abuse among youths, highlighting the concerns it raises for parents and health professionals. She pointed out that the brains of many young people are still in the developmental stage, making them particularly susceptible to the harmful effects of illicit substances.

Ms. Dim stressed that the long-term consequences of drug abuse can be severe, impacting various aspects of a person’s life. These effects may include deteriorating mental health and impaired cognitive functions, such as memory deficits.

Explaining further, she noted that drug abuse occurs when an individual disregards the consequences of using drugs due to a strong desire to consume them. This behaviour can lead to significant changes in the individual’s lifestyle and relationships.

To prevent substance abuse among youths, Ms. Dim suggested several strategies. These include resisting peer pressure, avoiding drug use, maintaining a balanced lifestyle, nurturing strong family relationships, and using prescribed medication responsibly. Additionally, she recommended learning healthy coping mechanisms and educating oneself about the dangers of drug abuse.
