Primary school teachers in Abuja are set to resume a strike on Monday, January 15, following a directive from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT). This decision was reached after an emergency meeting of the Standing Committee of the NUT for the FCT, as outlined in a communique dated January 12, 2024.

The communique, co-signed by Abdullahi Shafas, the chairman of the NUT in the FCT, Margaret Jethro, the Secretary, and Ibukun Adekeye, the Publicity Secretary, directed secondary school teachers to join the strike from January 22 if the demands of the primary school teachers were not met by January 19.

Expressing concern over the situation, the communique highlighted the plight of primary school teachers amidst the removal of fuel subsidies and the subsequent increase in the cost of living. It criticized the failure of area council chairmen to address the teachers’ entitlements and the delay in the minister’s intervention.

In response to these issues, the State Wing Standing Committee in-Session made the decision to resume the suspended strike, effective from Monday, January 15, 2024. Furthermore, if the outstanding demands of the primary school teachers are not met by Friday, January 19, 2024, all secondary school teachers in the FCT will join the strike in solidarity from Monday, January 22, 2024.
