The Nigeria Police Force has apprehended a fake doctor, Igwe Gift Okechukwu, for his involvement in a range of criminal activities, including organ trafficking, fraud, cybercrime, stealing, impersonation, cheating, and identity theft. Okechukwu was arrested by operatives of the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Nasarawa State following his fraudulent activities in Owerri, Imo State.

The suspect, who had been posing as Henry Ovie, a neurologist newly transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri, deceived a point of sale (POS) operator named Anita Chinwe Mathias into entering a code on her POS machine. Subsequently, a total of twenty-one million naira (N21,000,000) was withdrawn from her account, prompting her to report the incident to the police.

Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, revealed these details during a press conference in Abuja. He explained that Okechukwu had employed a deceptive strategy, building trust with the victim by sending a significant sum to her account before tricking her into entering the code that facilitated the fraudulent withdrawal.

Anita Mathias recounted that the suspect used multiple identities and phone numbers, including Igwe Richard and Ovie Henry, to perpetrate his crimes. After realizing the withdrawal and failing to reach the suspect, she reported the case to the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja, leading to the suspect’s arrest.

Further investigations revealed that the fake doctor had changed his phone number and relocated from Owerri to Lafia, Nasarawa State, where he was eventually apprehended. It was also uncovered that Okechukwu had links to organ trafficking, with connections to a contact in Toronto, Canada.

In response to the arrest, Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, reiterated the force’s commitment to combatting crime and ensuring the safety and security of communities. He assured the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing, and all individuals involved in these criminal activities will be brought to justice and prosecuted accordingly.
