The National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) has called on Nigerians to be vigilant against the spread of fake news, emphasizing the need for a more secure and trustworthy society.

Mr. Lanre Gbajabiamila, the Director-General of NLRC, highlighted the destructive potential of fake news, warning that it could tarnish the reputation of credible organizations and fuel discord among people.

Citing a recent incident where the NLRC was wrongly accused of generating six billion naira but remitting none, Gbajabiamila stressed the importance of verifying information before believing or spreading it.

He urged Nigerians to exercise caution when consuming news from social media platforms, emphasizing the need for critical scrutiny to distinguish between misinformation and credible reports.

Gbajabiamila clarified that the misinformation in question falsely implicated the NLRC in fund misappropriation by the Nigerian Lottery Trust Fund (NLTF), leading to confusion and unwarranted scrutiny.

He reiterated that the NLRC had no involvement in the alleged misappropriation and was not responsible for lottery figures in Nigeria. He also highlighted that the NLRC’s Central Monitoring System, which would provide accurate data on lottery activities, had not been deployed yet.

Despite media apologies for the error, Gbajabiamila expressed concern that some individuals were using the mistake to target the NLRC maliciously.

He emphasized the NLRC’s unwavering commitment to transparency and fairness, urging the public to rely on verified information and avoid spreading false news that could undermine the integrity of the lottery sector.
