The Police Command in Oyo State has taken disciplinary action against two of its special constables, Kareem Fatai and Jimoh Lukman, who were dismissed over allegations of extortion. The Commissioner of Police (CP), Adebola Hamzat, made this announcement during a press briefing at the Command’s Headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan.

According to CP Hamzat, the dismissal followed an incident captured in a viral video where the constables were seen soliciting money from a tourist from the Netherlands, Ms. Noraly Schoenmaker, along the Moniya-Iseyin road on October 23. Despite repeated warnings and directives against professional misconduct, extortion, incivilities to the public, and corruption, the dismissed constables were found to have deliberately engaged in these prohibited activities.

The CP emphasized the zero-tolerance stance of the Inspector General of Police and the Oyo State Police Command towards corruption and professional misconduct. He expressed disappointment that the actions of the constables had tarnished the image of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) internationally, stating that the NPF has previously served in various countries without being implicated in extortion or corruption.

CP Hamzat admonished other officers to be content with their salaries and not engage in corrupt practices that could bring disrepute to the force. He warned that the dismissal of Fatai and Lukman serves as a deterrent to other officers with similar inclinations, emphasizing the commitment of the Oyo State Police Command to upholding integrity and professionalism.
