Umar Damagum, the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has confirmed that the party intends to sanction former Rivers State Governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for his alleged involvement in anti-party activities.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Damagum stated that the party leadership would take action against Wike and others found to have engaged in activities detrimental to the party’s interests at the appropriate time.

Damagum emphasized the need to maintain stability within the party and avoid unnecessary conflicts, highlighting that the party would act within the bounds of the law. He expressed the party’s intention to address internal issues without causing further disruptions.

The acting chairman also mentioned the formation of a 2023 review committee, which is yet to be inaugurated, to investigate the events of the 2023 elections. The committee will reportedly recommend sanctions against Wike and any other individuals implicated in activities contrary to the party’s objectives.

The statement from Damagum comes amidst a political crisis in Rivers State, which is governed by the PDP. The crisis escalated when 27 lawmakers loyal to Wike defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a bid to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who is also the Deputy Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum.

Wike, who openly opposed the PDP’s presidential ticket in 2023, had previously challenged the party leadership to take disciplinary action against him. He expressed confidence in his position within the party and affirmed his support for Asiwaju Tinubu, a prominent figure in the APC.
