The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has ordered the demolition of approximately 200 houses in the Nuwalege community near the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja. This decision comes in response to a request from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to clear the area for the expansion of the Presidential Fleet.

Mukhtar Galadima, the Director of the Department of Development Control, revealed this development during a community and citizens’ engagement session held in the area. According to Galadima, the NAF had approached the FCTA with a request to clear the village as it falls within the planned expansion area for the presidential fleet plots.

Galadima emphasized that the FCTA would handle the matter, following the Minister’s directive. He stressed the importance of engaging with the community before initiating any demolition activities, highlighting the need for fairness and transparency in the process.

Regarding the number of structures to be affected, Galadima indicated that approximately 150 to 200 houses, along with associated commercial stores, would be demolished to make way for the expansion project.

Addressing concerns about compensation for affected residents, Galadima stated that discussions with the NAF were underway. He emphasized the need to verify previous compensations, if any, and ensure that affected individuals had received fair compensation for their properties.

Galadima also underscored the importance of community engagement, noting that discussions had already taken place with the community leaders. He mentioned plans for further consultations involving the NAF, relevant government departments, and community leaders to ensure that all stakeholders were adequately informed and involved in the process.

The proposed demolition has sparked mixed reactions within the Nuwalege community, with some expressing concerns about the potential loss of their homes and businesses. As discussions continue between the FCTA, the NAF, and the affected residents, the fate of these properties remains uncertain.
