President Bola Tinubu has assured members of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN) of his administration’s unwavering commitment to media freedom. Speaking during a meeting in Abuja, the President pledged to uphold diverse opinions, whether critical or complimentary to his government.

Tinubu acknowledged concerns raised by NPAN regarding existing regulations affecting the paper industry, particularly those hindering local access to newsprint. He assured members that their request for a review of policies impacting the industry would be carefully considered, emphasizing the importance of a vibrant media landscape.

Addressing challenges faced by travellers during the festive season, President Tinubu revealed that the federal government is implementing measures to alleviate the high cost of transportation. This includes granting waivers to operators in the air, road, and rail transportation systems. Additionally, steps are being taken to reduce the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

Expressing gratitude for the support and constructive criticism from the media, Tinubu stated, ”Without the support of some of you, I will not be standing here as president. You have held our feet to the fire, and we will continue to respect your opinions whether we agree or not. One thing I must say is that I read every paper, various opinions, and columnists.’’

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to economic reforms, citing bold decisions to end the petrol subsidy regime and initiate the unification of foreign exchange rates. He promised transparency in governance and outlined investments in health, infrastructure, transportation, and education to secure the country’s future, particularly addressing the needs of the less privileged.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, echoed the federal government’s commitment to a vibrant and responsible media landscape. He emphasised the role of the media in upholding principles of transparency, accountability, and the free flow of information.

NPAN President, Mr. Kabiru Yusuf, congratulated President Tinubu on his election victory and Supreme Court affirmation. He highlighted pressing concerns facing the newspaper industry, underscoring its significance in democracy and as a reliable source of information.
