President Bola Tinubu has voiced his apprehension regarding the escalating emigration of skilled Nigerian professionals and university graduates pursuing advanced education, employment, and prospects on the global stage.

The president expressed these concerns during the 2023 National Migration Dialogue, organized by the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) in Abuja.

Represented by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, President Tinubu highlighted the dialogue’s theme, “Leveraging on Youth Migration for National Development.”

He stressed the importance of exploring the interconnectedness of migration, youth, and national development within the Nigerian context, given that the youth constitute 16 per cent of the world’s population.

Nigeria, with one of the highest global population growth rates, is anticipated by the World Bank to potentially double its population in the next 25 to 30 years.

Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria serves as a pivotal hub for young migrants, both as a source and destination country. He urged the need for alternative strategies to address the challenges posed by irregular migration routes.

President Tinubu expressed confidence that by diversifying the economy, Nigeria could contribute to a more balanced and resilient growth trajectory.

Tijani Ahmed, the federal commissioner of NCFRMI, highlighted the dialogue’s purpose in addressing migration challenges, particularly as they intersect with the aspirations and potential of the youth.

Ahmed stated that the commission, in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and other stakeholders, has successfully assisted in the reception of over 4,500 voluntary and forced returnees from various countries.

These migrants are currently undergoing integration into various reintegration programmes initiated by the government, civil society organisations, and international partners.

Laurent De Boeck, Chief of Mission at IOM, emphasized the importance of government policies that demonstrate care for the diaspora and avoid being extractive to harness the potential of youth migration.

He reiterated IOM’s commitment to collaborating with the national government and relevant stakeholders to alter the migration narrative and enhance regular pathways for migrants.
