The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has called upon the United States Government to lend its support to Nigeria in addressing the challenges of insecurity and corruption.

The plea was made during a visit by a delegation from the US Embassy in Nigeria, led by Chargé d’Affaires David Greene.

In a statement released by his media aide, Musa Abdullahi-Krishi, Speaker Abbas stressed the importance of international cooperation, asserting that Nigeria’s stability is of global significance.

He highlighted the historical economic partnership between the US and Nigeria, acknowledging the US as the strongest economic ally.

The Speaker underscored the shared values between the two countries, with Nigeria adopting the American style of democracy.

He emphasised the strategic nature of the relationship and expressed gratitude for the continuous support provided by the US through its development partners and agencies.

As part of efforts to strengthen democratic values, Speaker Abbas mentioned the establishment of parliamentary friendship groups, with the US identified as a primary collaborator.

The goal is to facilitate collaboration, idea-sharing, and mutual learning between legislators from both nations.

Amid Nigeria’s challenges, especially in dealing with insecurity, corruption, and threats like Boko Haram, the Speaker urged the US to intensify its support.

He acknowledged past assistance but emphasised the potential for further collaboration to ensure Nigeria’s success, which, in turn, would have positive implications for Africa and the world.

Chargé d’Affaires David Greene, expressing condolences for the recent accidental bombing in Kaduna, highlighted the commonalities between the US and Nigeria as federal republics with a commitment to democratic processes.

The meeting aimed to discuss shared concerns and explore opportunities for continued cooperation between the two nations.
