Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced that the automated passport application process is on the verge of being implemented, with expectations to go live within the next week.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, the minister revealed that the technology for this feature is at a 99% completion stage, with testing already conducted.

The streamlined process aims to simplify passport applications for Nigerian nationals, allowing them to complete the entire application from the comfort of their homes.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the only requirement at an immigration or passport centre would be biometrics, specifically fingerprinting.

When questioned about the possibility of completing the application process from home, the minister confirmed, “Of course!”

He explained that the automated system would include the upload of passport photos and supporting documents, providing a more efficient and convenient experience for applicants.

Despite the focus on convenience, Tunji-Ojo stressed that the government is equally committed to national security.

The automated process seeks to strike a balance between enhancing security measures and providing a comfortable application experience for citizens.

In addition to the automated passport application, the minister revealed plans for the implementation of e-gates at all Nigerian international airports by February 2024.

This technological advancement aims to expedite the entry process for Nigerian travellers, eliminating the need for interaction with immigration officers unless individuals raise security concerns.

The anticipated launch of the automated passport application process is expected to mark a significant step forward in modernising and simplifying administrative procedures for Nigerian citizens, aligning with the government’s broader efforts to leverage technology for enhanced efficiency and security.
