In a tale of prolonged legal limbo, an inmate in Kano, who has been awaiting the amputation of his left leg and right hand for 18 years, may find reprieve as the Grand Khadi of Kano State, Dr Tijjani Ibrahim-Yakasai, intervenes in the case.

The unnamed convict faced the severe sentence after being declared guilty of theft by a Shari’a Court in Kano.

Despite the court’s order, the inmate has languished in Kano Correctional Center for nearly two decades without the execution of the sentence.

Dr Tijjani Ibrahim-Yakasai has now stepped in, forming a committee to review the case and address the prolonged delay in carrying out the sentence.

The committee, comprising six judges and headed by Upper Sharia Court Judge Malam Ibrahim Sarki-Yola, aims to scrutinize the circumstances surrounding the inmate’s extended stay in the correctional centre without the implementation of the amputation sentence.

In a broader effort to decongest custodial facilities in the state, Dr Tijjani Ibrahim-Yakasai has granted bail to 147 offenders with minor offences.

This compassionate move seeks to alleviate the overcrowded conditions in custodial centers and ensure justice is served in a timely manner.

The Controller of Corrections, Mr Suleiman Mohammed-Inuwa, expressed gratitude to the Grand Khadi for taking steps to decongest the facilities.

He urged the released inmates to exhibit good behavior and set an example for others in society.
