The government of Oyo State has announced its intention to collaborate with Education Secretaries and Heads of Sections in every local government area to close down substandard primary schools within the state.

During a meeting with key stakeholders in basic education, the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Professor Soliu Abdulwaheed Adelabu, emphasised the need to eliminate what he referred to as “mushroom” schools operating within Oyo State.

Adelabu stressed that the Ministry and Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB) would work closely with relevant parties to address the issue of substandard primary schools.

He directed Education Secretaries and Heads of Sections in the state’s 33 local government areas to prepare for a crackdown on such schools.

Expressing his dissatisfaction with the results of a recent field inspection, Adelabu identified measures to prevent basic errors in the basic education sector.

He also urged stakeholders to enhance their oversight of the schools under their jurisdiction.

Adelabu disclosed that Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration is committed to addressing the infrastructural challenges faced by primary schools in the state.

The governor has instructed the Ministry to identify schools in urgent need of infrastructure improvements.

He further stated, “The Oyo State government is dedicated to ensuring that every school-age child has access to education. However, our commitment to providing quality and standard education in the state remains unwavering.”
