Nigeria’s landmark feat in data privacy and protection has earned it a coveted spot in the Global Privacy Assembly (GPA). In a nod to the country’s remarkable achievements in this arena, Nigeria’s Data Protection Act 2023, recently signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, played a pivotal role in securing this membership.

Adding to the accolades is the establishment of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, which operates as an independent data protection authority for the nation, further affirming Nigeria’s commitment to safeguarding data and privacy.

This momentous decision was unveiled during the 45th Global Privacy Assembly Closed Session, which convened from October 15th to 20th, 2023, on the idyllic shores of Bermuda.

The GPA, tracing its origins back to 1979, serves as a global platform for harmonising efforts to advance data privacy and protection. Boasting 130 data protection authorities from nations worldwide, the GPA includes prominent figures in data protection like Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, South Africa, Portugal, Canada, Senegal, and now Nigeria.

Upon receiving the news of Nigeria’s inclusion in this prestigious assembly, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner and CEO of the NDPC, expressed optimism about the Federal Government’s digital transformation initiatives bearing fruit.

Dr. Olatunji issued a call to all stakeholders in the data processing realm, urging them to maintain the highest standards when handling personal data. Doing so will contribute significantly to fortifying trust and confidence in Nigeria’s burgeoning digital economy.
