The Nigerian Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Ibrahim, has urged the country’s youth to actively contribute to the nation’s progress and refrain from seeking opportunities abroad.

Speaking at the Youth Agenda Summit organised by ILEAD Africa, she emphasised the need for Nigerian youth to engage in nation-building.

Represented by Oyekan Adedoyin, an Assistant Director of the Ministry, Jamila urged young people to participate in the development of Nigeria, assuring them that the government is working to create a conducive environment.

She acknowledged that migration is a personal choice but encouraged the youth to consider staying by creating opportunities in Nigeria.

“Nigeria is a complex nation, but we need to play our part in nation-building. The government is making efforts, and the establishment of a separate Youth Ministry and increased youth representation in appointments reflect our commitment. We are also working on initiatives to encourage people to stay in the country,” she stated.

She emphasised the importance of empowering the youth and providing opportunities for their involvement in governance and developmental processes.

In addition, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, Abiodun Easier, challenged Nigerian youth to harness their digital skills and talents to address the country’s challenges.

Easier highlighted that young people often seek opportunities abroad due to the perception of a lack of prospects in Nigeria.

“We need our youth to tap into their digital skills and innovations to tackle our country’s problems. We call on skilled Nigerians abroad to return home and invest their expertise in our nation,” she said.

Yusuff Abiodun, the Chief Executive of ILEAD Africa, stressed the importance of encouraging transparency, accountability, and youth involvement in governance and policymaking.

He emphasised that the Youth Agenda Summit serves as a platform for young Nigerians to participate actively in shaping their country’s future and promoting civic engagement.

The event, held on a significant date in history—the Endsars movement anniversary—aimed to advocate for greater transparency, accountability, and increased youth participation in decision-making processes.

The Youth Agenda Summit focuses on empowering young people to become active citizens and contribute to the development of Nigeria.
