The Nigerian government, under President Bola Tinubu, has renamed the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, in recognition of the contributions of the former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, to the nation’s stability.

The University of Abuja, established in January 1988 as a dual-mode institution offering both conventional and distance learning programs, is a prominent public university located in the capital city, Abuja.

This decision was announced by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press briefing at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Tinubu at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to the Minister, the renaming acknowledges General Gowon’s significant role in maintaining the country’s unity. He added that the resolution will be communicated to the National Assembly for formal adoption.

In this same vein, Idris noted that the Federal Executive Council members will commence a recess on December 18, 2024, and resume on January 6, 2025.
