Labour Party Asks EFCC To Probe Peter Obi, Aisha Yesufu, Afenifere Over Alleged Misappropriation Of Campaign Funds
On September 12, 2024, the Labour Party (LP) demanded an investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the National Security Adviser (NSA) into claims of misappropriation of campaign funds. The LP, led by Julius Abure, alleged that significant donations meant for the party’s 2023 presidential campaign were diverted.
National Publicity Secretary Abayomi Arabambi raised concerns about the misallocation of over ₦12 billion and $15 million. He accused the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, activist Aisha Yesufu, Pastor Itua Ighodalo, and leaders of the pan-Yoruba group Afenifere of financial misconduct. Arabambi described Obi as a “political merchant” and alleged that he orchestrated the fraudulent mismanagement of funds.
Arabambi criticized Yesufu’s public defense of her actions, dismissing it as an attempt to obscure the truth. The allegations also involved Afenifere leaders, including Pa Ayo Adebanjo, Akin Osuntokun, and Sola Ebiseni, who were accused of holding over ₦600 million in private accounts meant for the LP’s campaign.
The LP has called for a thorough investigation into all bank accounts linked to the alleged misconduct and urged the EFCC to act swiftly. Arabambi emphasized the party’s commitment to transparency and accountability, demanding a comprehensive probe into the financial activities of the accused individuals and organizations.
