‘Federal Projects Disregard State Needs,’ Claims Kebbi Governor

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State recently stressed the importance of enhancing collaboration between Nigeria’s federal and state governments, aiming to optimise the delivery of democracy’s dividends to the populace. Speaking with reporters in Abuja this Friday, Idris highlighted the crucial role such cooperation plays, not only in aligning projects and social services but also in educating the public on various policies and programmes.

Idris pointed out that state governors and local council chairpersons possess a deeper understanding of their constituents’ needs due to their proximity. He criticised the federal government’s approach to policy-making, which often leaves states and local governments in the dark, leading to the implementation of initiatives that fail to address the grassroots’ real issues.

The governor illustrated his point with an example from his own experience, where a federal road project was initiated in Kebbi State without his knowledge. According to Idris, the project, which was included in the 2024 federal budget, was not only unnecessary but also overlooked more critical infrastructure needs of the local populace. He expressed his frustration over the selection of projects that seem to misalign with the state’s priorities, despite Kebbi’s willingness to contribute financially to more urgent road repairs.

Governor Idris also voiced his belief in the reciprocal nature of democracy, where electoral support should be rewarded with tangible improvements in living conditions. He argued that the people’s expectations for basic amenities are a direct result of their electoral choices, particularly highlighting the role of leaders within the All Progressives Congress to fulfil these expectations.

Furthermore, Idris advocated for the inclusion of not just progressive governors but all governors, local government chairmen, and councillors in the planning and execution of federal government policies. Such inclusivity, he believes, is essential for truly democratic governance that meets the needs of all Nigerians. This call to action serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in achieving cohesive governance across Nigeria’s multiple layers of government.
