Abuja Residents Loot Government Warehouse Amidst Economic Crisis

Residents of Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, took advantage of a government warehouse on Sunday morning, looting food items in the midst of the country’s economic turmoil. The incident, which began around 7 a.m. and lasted until about 9 a.m., occurred against the backdrop of a sharp increase in the cost of goods and services, with prices rising by over 200% without a corresponding increase in income.

The economic crisis, attributed to the removal of petrol subsidies and the floating of the naira, has led to protests in several parts of Nigeria. The government has defended these policies as necessary for the economy, despite the hardships faced by citizens.

The warehouse targeted by looters in Abuja had also been raided during the COVID-19 crisis in 2020. However, the police have stated that officers have since arrived at the scene and restored order.
