Senate President Godswill Akpabio has criticized the economic policies of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele, stating that they left the nation’s economy in a dire state, leading to current hardships.

Akpabio made these remarks during a thanksgiving service by Senator Barinada Mpigi in Koroma, Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State on Sunday.

He assured Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu is capable of fixing the economy, despite the challenges, emphasizing that he requested the job with a clear understanding of the task ahead.

Acknowledging the difficulties faced by Nigerians, Akpabio urged patience, noting that the deep-rooted economic issues of over 60 years cannot be resolved in a few months.

Regarding Emefiele’s tenure, Akpabio remarked that the former CBN governor’s actions and policies contributed to the current economic hardship, stating, “You know that the former governor of the central bank, we did not even know what to charge him with.”

He humorously suggested possible charges against Emefiele, such as illegal possession of firearms or printing naira notes without income, highlighting the confusion regarding what charges should be brought against him.

Akpabio emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by Nigerians, including hunger and insecurity, but stressed the need for patience, stating, “The rots that have happened in Nigeria for so many years for almost 60 years cannot be solved in six months.”

Emefiele has faced allegations of financial crimes since his removal from office in June 2023, with the federal government expanding criminal charges against him from six counts to 20 counts on January 18.
