The World Bank, in partnership with the Katsina State Government, has initiated the allocation of a N4.5 billion School Improvement Grant (SIG) to 150 selected primary schools across various communities in the state.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda officially commenced the distribution of the funds on Thursday at Shagumba Primary School in Batagarawa Local Government Area. During the launch, he emphasized that the School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) would oversee the use and administration of the funds on behalf of the beneficiary schools and communities.

The selection of recipient schools was based on specific criteria, including the level of deterioration, the number of students in nearby communities, and the issues related to water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities. Governor Radda urged the SBMC members to ensure the prudent use of the funds for their intended purpose, cautioning against any mismanagement for personal gain.

He stated, “SBMCs are expected not to rely solely on the SIG funds. They should seek support from affluent individuals within their communities to ensure that school-age children are back in school and learning until completion.”

Governor Radda called on SBMCs, education secretaries, zonal coordinators, and other stakeholders to monitor service delivery, teacher attendance, insubordination, absenteeism, and report any misconduct to the state government. He emphasized his administration’s commitment to fulfilling all campaign promises promptly and urged his appointees to expedite the implementation of pending projects in the state.

Highlighting the shared responsibility for education and service delivery, Governor Radda emphasized the need for stakeholders to contribute directly or indirectly to enhance societal welfare.
