Senate Summons Service Chiefs Over Escalating Security Crisis
The Senate has taken a decisive step in addressing the growing security challenges plaguing Nigeria by inviting the country’s Service Chiefs for an interactive session. This decision was made after a motion titled “Motion on Spate of Insecurity in Nigeria” was presented by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele during a plenary session following a closed-door meeting.
Mr. Bamidele highlighted the alarming increase in killings, kidnappings, banditry, and other criminal activities across the nation, expressing deep concern over the recent incidents in Agata and Logo local government areas of Benue State. He also drew attention to the numerous kidnappings in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and various parts of the country, where victims have been killed even after ransom payments.
The motion further underscored the severity of the security situation, citing the killings of traditional rulers in Ekiti State, the abduction of primary school pupils in the same state, and a bomb explosion in Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo State, which claimed several lives and caused extensive damage to property.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio reiterated the Senate’s commitment to addressing the security challenges, emphasizing the need for collaboration with the executive to ensure the safety and well-being of Nigerians. He announced plans for an interactive session with the security chiefs, followed by discussions with President Bola Tinubu to chart a path towards enhanced security and national progress.
In related news, the Senate has adjourned its sitting till February 6 to allow senators to participate in the upcoming bye-elections.
The Senate’s proactive stance in addressing the country’s security concerns through engagement with the Service Chiefs underscores its commitment to national security and stability. The forthcoming interactive session with the security chiefs is expected to provide a platform for robust discussions and strategic planning aimed at tackling the root causes of insecurity in Nigeria.
