The Nigerian Navy recently transferred custody of 11 individuals suspected of planning to construct an illegal refinery to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Port Harcourt. Cdr. Sa’id Kabir, the Base Operations Officer of the Nigeria Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder Port Harcourt, supervised the handover to Monday Lawal of the NSCDC Command in Rivers.

According to Mr. Kabir, the suspects were apprehended during a patrol of the Krakrama Waterways aimed at combating illegal oil bunkering in Rivers. The operation was part of the navy’s strategic mandate to eliminate crude oil and petroleum product theft. During the patrol, the NNS Pathfinder’s Tactical Response and Assault Squadron intercepted a boat carrying 11 individuals and discovered 10 metal plates, 14 angle iron, and 20 gas cylinders concealed in the boat. These materials were believed to be intended for the construction of an illegal refining facility in the creeks near Bille, a riverine community.

Further investigation revealed that the suspects were specializing in the construction of illegal refineries and had been hired by an individual named Mr. John. Efforts are underway to apprehend Mr. John and any other suspects involved in the illegal enterprise.

Cdr. Kabir issued a warning to oil thieves, urging them to desist from their activities as the NNS Pathfinder is intensifying efforts to arrest and prosecute them. He also highlighted the navy’s awareness of attempts by criminal elements to undermine their operations and assured the public of their commitment to ensuring a secure environment for legitimate business activities in Rivers.

Upon receiving the suspects and seized items, Mr. Lawal of the NSCDC assured that the matter would be thoroughly investigated, and if the suspects were found guilty, they would be promptly arraigned.
